Carney's Diplomatic Breakthrough with India's Modi: A New Partnership and Billions in Deals
In a significant diplomatic move, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of multi-million dollar deals and a commitment to sign a free trade agreement by the end of the year. This marks a turning point in the bilateral relationship, moving away from years of tension and allegations of Indian foreign interference. The agreement aims to more than double two-way trade to approximately $70 billion annually by 2030, with Canada diversifying its trade and reducing its reliance on the U.S.
The centerpiece of this new partnership is a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, a free trade deal that Canada hopes to sign by December. This agreement will provide Canadian exports with relief from India's high tariffs on certain goods, fostering a more robust economic relationship.
Carney emphasized the expansion of a valued partnership with new ambition and focus, highlighting the potential for both countries to thrive in an uncertain global landscape. Modi, known for his media shyness, praised Carney's leadership and expressed his commitment to growing cooperation between the nations.
The deals signed include:
- A $2.6 billion uranium supply agreement between India and Saskatoon-based Cameco, benefiting Saskatchewan's uranium reserves.
- A $155 million investment by Indian pharmaceuticals firm Jubilant Pharmanova to triple production at a sterile injectibles plant in Quebec.
- Elk Valley Resources, a B.C.-based coal producer, will sell 1.2 million tonnes of coal to India.
- McCain Foods will invest $135 million in expanding its potato-processing plant in Gujarat.
- HCL Technologies, an Indian IT firm, will establish new AI centers in Calgary and Mississauga, Ontario, and expand its Vancouver location, creating 2,250 jobs.
- Five memorandums of understanding worth $5.5 billion in total, covering energy, critical minerals, technology, talent, culture, and defense.
The agreement also includes a focus on security and law enforcement cooperation, addressing transnational repression and illegal drug trafficking. Carney's visit marks a significant step towards a prosperous and collaborative relationship between Canada and India, offering generational opportunities for workers and businesses in both nations.
