The noisy California sea lions have claimed Deep Bay as their temporary home, much to the delight and surprise of locals and visitors alike. These marine mammals, known for their boisterous nature, have embarked on a six-month northern adventure, and now they're waiting for the upcoming herring run, a true feast for both sea lions and humans, as David Rosen, a marine biologist from UBC, explains.
Rosen describes the herring as "the ultimate buffet" due to their high-fat content and tendency to form large, easy-to-catch aggregations. It's a true seafood lover's dream!
But here's where it gets controversial: while the sea lions have drawn crowds of curious onlookers, taking pictures and enjoying the unique sight, there's a catch. The law requires people and their furry friends, i.e., dogs, to maintain a respectful distance of at least 100 meters from these marine mammals.
